Dangerous Goods

The increasing amounts of dangerous cargo, including radioactive materials, carried overseas requires an international framework of regulations and good practice. The IMDG Code, mandatory since 2004, provides this framwork incorporating basic principles; detailed recommendations for individual substances, materials and articles, and a number of recommendations for good operational practice including advice on terminology, packing, labelling, stowage, segregation and handling, and emergency response action.

The course focuses on the IMDG Code with an emphasis on Radioactive Materials and aspects of insurance and security. This course has been offered for more than 20 years at the World Maritime University. Thanks to the support of institutions like Ports of Bremen and the World Nuclear Transport Institute, it offers a unique opportunity to combine theory and practice at a high level, enabling practitioners to apply the essence of regulations and established best practice in their daily wotk with Dangerous Goods and Radioactive Materials.

Maritime English - Upgrading Teaching Competencies

Effective communication onboard and between ship and shore is critical to a safe, secure operational environment. The globalisation of maritime services, including  multi cultural crews has led to the adoption and use of the English language for day to day communication .The maritime world has developed a ‘standard’ form of English which is designed to limit, if not eradicate the opportunities for misunderstanding. These standards of communicative competency are reflected in legal instruments of the International Maritime Organization.

Many maritime institutions are now delivering Maritime English (ME) courses. But there are limited opportunities for ME teachers to develop or upgrade their individual competencies. Accordingly, WMU has introduced a specialised Professional Development Course (PDC) for those professionals engaged at maritime institutions in teaching Maritime English. This unique programme incorporates individual professional interests and needs.

Duration: 10 days

Maritime English - Upgrading Teaching Competencies - has been scheduled to commence April 26 to May 7 2010.
