DESCRIPTION:The new MaRiSa (Maritime Risk and Safety) research group was officially launched on 6 June 2009. MaRiSa is the umbrella for the research that has been going on into risk governance, which is currently being carried out by Jens-Uwe Schröder, Michael Baldauf, and by PhD student Kevin Ghirxi. A second PhD student, Michael Manuel was also a member of the group; Michael, whose research was supported by Sheldon Kinney fellowship, successfully defended his thesis in August, and was the first graduate of the WMU doctoral programme, being awarded his degree in October 2009.\n“We are hoping to find new synergies, and develop multi-disciplinary research angles into the area of maritime risk management,” said Jens-Uwe Schröder. The research group has been very active in a wide range of EU-funded projects, including MarNIS I, and has just been successful in its bid to lead the ADOPTMAN project, as well as being a member of the consortium which successfully bid for money for the IMPACT project. \n“MarNIS I was a success, and we hope now to follow up some of the topics and develop them further,” said Michael Baldauf. MarNIS I focused on the integration of vessel traffic services (VTS) and search and rescue (SAR) to provide a combined traffic management and emergency response centre (MOS – maritime operation services). Other areas of interest for the members of MaRiSa include e-navigation - a top priority for IMO – maritime border control, human-element related issues and Arctic shipping. “As climate change opens up the possibility of much more Arctic traffic, we need much more research into operational aspects of Arctic shipping, in areas ranging from ship design to routing and emergency response in a difficult climate,” said Jens-Uwe Schröder.\nThe group is also currently working on a major IMO-sponsored SAR project related to passenger ships, which will be complete by the end of the year.
