MoU with MARINA, Philippines

A Memorandum of Understanding on Academic Cooperation was signed on 26 November between the Department of Transportation and Communications Maritime Administrative Authority (MARINA), Republic of the Philippines and WMU. The agreement enables linkages in the fields of marine and maritime affairs, and associated fields, with MARINA funding one academically qualified employee annually for the duration of the five-year agreement. In addition, the MoU provides for co-operation including academic exchanges and exploring the potential of MARINA hosting field studies for Malmö-based M.Sc. students.

The MoU was signed by WMU President Björn Kjerfve, and the Administrator of MARINA, WMU alumnus and Professor, Dr. Maximo Q. Mejia, Jr. (MSA(N) 1994). Key individuals present at the signing included Nestor R Mijares, Deputy Director General, National Economic and Development Authority, Maria Fe Pangilinan, Deputy Chief of Mission for the Philippine Embassy in London, and Voltaire Onesimo Mauricio, First Secretary and Consul of the Philippine Embassy in London.

The MoU provides the first funding for Filipino students by a Filipino source. With a total of 130 alumni, the Philippines ranks third in the countries with the most WMU graduates.
