Regulation & Best Practice - Getting the Balance Right
May 21, 2010 - 1:08pm

On 19 May, the annual WMU/Nautical Institute joint seminar was held, on the theme of Regulation & Best Practice - Getting the Balance Right

The seminar debated and explored the balance between using regulation and best practice guides to address the operational challenges in the maritime industry. Both tools are essential for an effective industry, but the seminar considered whether we have the balance right, and also looked carefully at the legal status of best practice.

The NI and WMU are keen to engage practitioners in this debate for the benefit of the whole industry, and the seminar is open each year to everyone active in the maritime sector who has an interest in the topic. The seminar offered a programme of keynote speakers, panel discussions and workshops, discussed the current implementation of best practice and analysed future needs for development and growth. Keynote speakers came from InterManager, Ince & Co, the Nautical Institute and the World Maritime University.
