Two new PhD awards

Abhinayan Basu Bal successfully defended his thesis, "A Critical Evaluation of the Rotterdam Rules: Selected Issues in Perspective" on 17 June.  The Examination Board was chaired by Professor P K Mukherjee, Director of the Doctoral Programme, and the two External Examiners were Professor Emeritus Marc A. Huybrechts, University of Antwerp and Professor Emeritus Gertjan van der Ziel, Erasmus University Rotterdam.  One of Mr. Basu Bal's supervisors, Professor D Rhidian Thomas of Swansea University, was also present.  His examiners unanimously awarded him a pass at the highest level.

Kevin Ghirxi successfully defended his thesis, "The Stopping Rule is no Rule at all: Exploring maritime safety investigation as an emergent process within a selection of IMO Member States" on 25 August.  The Examination Board was chaired by Professor P K Mukherjee, Director of the Doctoral Programme, the External Examiner was Professor Jin Wang, Head of Liverpool Logistics, Offshore and Marine Centre, Liverpool John Moores University, and the Internal Examiner was Assistant Professor Michael Baldauf.  His Supervisor, Dr Jens-Uwe Schröder-Hinrichs, was also present.  Kevin delivered a public lecture on his thesis the following day.  His studies were supported by his employer - Transport Malta - and by Lloyd's Register of Shipping and Det Norske Veritas.
