WMU Graduation 2012

On Sunday, 2 December, WMU’s Chancellor and IMO Secretary-General, Mr. Koji Sekimizu, conferred postgraduate degrees on the World Maritime University’s Class of 2012. The ceremony was a fitting tribute to the graduates who were addressed by several distingushed guests. 

The Guest of Honour for Sunday's graduation ceremony was Carl Johan Hagman, CEO of Stena AB Shipping. He spoke to the graduates about the global importance of shipping and the role they will contribute noting that he encounters WMU graduates on a daily basis in his work wtih Stena AB Shipping. 

Speeches were delivered by Secretary-General Sekimizu, and WMU President  Dr. Björn Kjerfve before the conferring of degrees for two Honorary Doctorates. The honorary degrees were awarded based on exceptional service to the international maritime community. The recipients were H.E. Binali Yıldırım, Minister for the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, Republic of Turkey, and Alberto Aleman Zubieta, Administrator/CEO, Autoridad del Canal de Panama (ret.).  

The program continued with the presentation of two Honorary Fellow Awards for distinguished and outstanding service to WMU. The awards were made to Chris Wortham, Manager of Maritime Safety Engineering for Inmarsat, and Chris Horrocks CBE, Secretary General, International Shipping Federation and International Chamber of Shipping (ret.). 

The first member of the Class of 2012 to receive their degree was Jong Kyun Woo of South Korea who received his WMU Ph.D. He was followed by 101 students who graduated from the Malmö-based M.Sc. program in Maritime Affairs, and 24 from the distance-learning Postgraduate Diploma in Marine Insurance.

Following the graduates receiving their diplomas, three awards for Outstanding Alumnus were presented. This is the first time such a distinction has been awarded at WMU. This year's recipients were H.E. Binali Yıldırım, Minister for the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, Republic of Turkey, who also serves on the WMU Board of Governors and Executive Board, Admiral Ramon C. Liwag PCG Commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard (ret.) and Admiral Edmund C. Tan, the current Commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard.

Toward the close of the ceremony, the annual student awards were announced. The Chancellor's Medal for Academic Excellence for the M.Sc. in Maritime Affairs 2012 in Malmö was awarded to Sotiris Vlastaris from Greece and for the Dalian M.Sc. Program to Meng Bin from P.R. of China. The Pierre Léonard Prize for the Best Female Student was awarded to Jenette Tifuh Mujingni Epse Cho from Cameroon and Nadiya Isikova from Ukraine received the Lloyd´s Maritime Academy Dissertation Prize. The Informa Law Dissertation Prize was awarded to Dinson Luis Baack Vasquez from Chile, and the final award of the evening, the C. P. Srivastava Award for International Fellowship, was awarded to Philippa Amanda Miriam Armah from Ghana.

This graduation ceremony brings the number of WMU graduates to 3,477 from 164 countries. WMU alumni are in positions to have a tremendous impact on the global maritime sector and lead its development into the future. They hold senior positions such as ministers of transport, directors of shipping companies and ports, and heads of maritime academies and many graduates represent their home countries at international forums and organizations such as the IMO. High expectations for the Class of 2012 are well-founded.
