Gonçalo Carneiro has worked for the past decade as researcher and consultant in areas related to marine conservation and management, including maritime transport, marine protected areas, fisheries and integrated management processes. With the environmental management group at the World Maritime University Gonçalo is working with marine spatial planning and evaluation of marine programmes. Gonçalo has recently conducted consultancy assignments with the Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment and with COWI, in Denmark. Earlier he has collaborated with Ramboll Natura, Stockholm and Fresti, Lisbon in projects relating to water resources management and maritime transport, respectively.
Gonçalo also collaborates with the Maria Scientia Maritime Affairs Research Group at the Portuguese Catholic University. He is member of the Swedish Evaluation Society, European Evaluation Society, and European MSP Research Network, and has acted as referee for the scientific journals Ecology & Society, Marine Policy, Natural Resources Forum, Marine Fisheries Review, EcoHealth and International Journal of Sociology and Anthropology.
Gonçalo holds a B.Sc. in Applied Chemistry from New University of Lisbon, an M.Sc. degree in maritime affairs from the World Maritime University, and a Ph.D. in marine policy from Cardiff University.
