Jaime Veiga joined EMSA in January 2005 and is responsible for the management of the sector which conducts evaluations of maritime education and training systems inside and outside the EU. He is also supervising the development and implementation of the STCW-IS. He participates regularly in IMO meetings, EU Council Shipping Working Parties and
meetings of the EU Committee on Safe Seas. He has been a speaker in several national and international conferences.

Following a career at sea (1982-1995) and prior to joining EMSA Jaime Veiga worked as Assistant Professor, Research Fellow and Research Associate at the Cardiff University (2000-2005) and R&D Manager at FRESTI (Portugal) (1995-2000). He is a Visiting professor at the World Maritime University and at the Portuguese Institute of
Economics and Business Administration.

He was supervisor and external examiner of MSc students of the Portuguese Maritime Academy (Portugal), University of Aveiro (Portugal) and the World Maritime University (Sweden). He was external examiner of PhD students of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (Spain) and the University of Évora (Portugal).

Jaime Veiga holds a PhD in Marine Policy from the University of Wales, a MSc in Maritime Safety Administration from the World Maritime University and a BSc in Management and Maritime Technologies from the Portuguese Maritime Academy. He holds a Master Mariner certificate.
