WMU is pleased to welcome Dr Dong-Wook Song as the first Republic of Korea Professorial Chair in Shipping and Port Management. He has an interest in managerial and strategic aspects of global shipping, port and logistics and currently serves as Co-Editor and Associate Editor of two major research outlets in the field of ‘logistics and supply chain management’ and ‘maritime transport and logistics’ – that is, Internal Journal of Logistics: Research and Applications and Maritime Policy and Management. Prior to joining WMU, he worked at Edinburgh Napier University and Heriot-Watt University in the UK, and Hong Kong University. He holds a BA (Hons) with First Class in Shipping Management from Korea Maritime University, an MSc in International Shipping and a PhD in Maritime Policy and Management from the University of Plymouth, UK.

“I have known WMU since my student days back in Korea and met a stream of WMU graduates all over the world throughout my career up to this point. I am really delighted to be part of WMU team and looking forward to meeting people here and sharing with each other a bunch of experiences and knowledge for the better maritime world,” stated Dr Song.

The Republic of Korea Professorial Chair was initially agreed upon at the close of 2014 during a visit by the WMU Acting President to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF). The Ministry has been a long-standing supporter of the University including hosting Field Studies for WMU students since 2004. The Memorandum of Understanding finalizing the Chair position was signed on 20 May 2015 on the occasion of the inauguration of the new WMU building. The Government of teh Republic of Korea has provided student fellowships for more than a decade, and Korean industry has also been a strong and long-term supporter of the University.
