Maritime Labour Convention PDC at WMU

From 26-28 November, eight students representing six different countries participated in the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006, Professional Development Course (PDC) at WMU. The MLC is anticipated to come into force in the coming year and is touted as both the Seafarers’ Bill of Rights and the Fourth Pillar of Maritime Safety. It contains detailed provisions that require uniform standards of welfare and safety for seafarers promoting a level playing field among operators in the maritime industry. Once it enters into force, MLC 2006 will lift international maritime labour standards as never before with legal, commercial, and practical implications for different stakeholders. The workshop provided an understanding of the various maritime labour issues facing the maritime industry in the advent of the entry into force of MLC 2006 including key concepts, rights, duties, and responsibilities.
