Seminar on Ships’ Routeing

The World Maritime University, in cooperation with the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, hosted a seminar on ships’ routeing at WMU on 3 February. Attended by staff members from Swedish national authorities who work with maritime transport and marine spatial planning, the seminar focused on increasing knowledge and understanding of the legal framework regulating ships’ routeing as well as the procedures to be followed when developing a proposal for amending shipping routes.

The seminar was organized in the context of Marine Spatial Planning, of which shipping is one of several key activities. WMU President, Dr Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry opened the seminar and welcomed the participants. WMU also contributed expertise to the event from various perspectives including ocean governance and the legal framework surrounding ships’ routeing.

Taking into account the relationship of shipping in regard to ocean planning contributes to sustainable management and protection of marine and coastal ecosystems in support of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
