The WMU Executive Board (EB) held its 21st Session at IMO Headquarters in London on 08 December 2017. It was preceded by meetings of the Endowment Fund Development and Investment Committees on 07 December 2017. Both Committees updated the EB members on progress made towards operationalizing the WMU Endowment Fund in 2018.

On 1 December, Mr. Kitack Lim, WMU Chancellor and Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of the World Maritime University (WMU), gathered with the WMU graduates in attendance at the 30th Session of the IMO Assembly.

In London on 29 November, Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of the World Maritime University (WMU), and Mr. Donald Roussel, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Safety and Security, Transport Canada (TC), signed two Memoranda of Understanding setting out the framework under which WMU will undertake two comparative studies:

On 3 November, Mr. Reinhard Klingen, Director-General Waterways and Shipping in the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure of Germany, visited WMU accompanied by WMU Governor, Professor Peter Ehlers. Mr. Klingen met with President Doumbia-Henry and confirmed the strong interest of Germany in further engaging with WMU.

A historic initiative to study global maritime training practices, investment and thought is underway with the launch of the inaugural MarTID survey (www.martid.org/survey).

At the 2017 WMU Graduation Ceremony on 5 November, a record number of six candidates were awarded the Doctor of Philosophy in Maritime Affairs. There are now 17 PhD graduates from 15 countries.
