Gillian Grant is Canada’s Alternate Representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and a qualified barrister and solicitor. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in History from Queen’s University and a Bachelor of Law and Masters of Public Administration from Dalhousie University.
She began her legal career clerking for a judge on Canada’s Federal Court of Appeal. She then joined the Canadian Justice department where she worked as counsel to the Correctional Service of Canada; counsel and special advisor to the Assistant Deputy Minister Public Law and, senior and later general counsel to Transport Canada specializing in maritime law. In these capacities she has advised senior Canadian officials on the legal aspects of their mandates, developed legislation and regulation and appeared in front of multiple Parliamentary committees.
Since assuming the post of Alternate Permanent Representative to the IMO in 2017, Ms. Grant has advised Canadian delegations to the IMO’s committees and sub-committees and to the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds and has acted as a liaison between these organizations and the Canadian government. She currently serves as Chair of the IMO Legal Committee, Chair of the Executive Committee of the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds, 1992 and member of the Board of Governors of the World Maritime University.
