Commandant SAJID HUSSAIN HonDSc MSc CEng CMarEng FIMarEST is leading ‘Bangladesh Marine Academy (BMA)’ since 2009.Informatively, he is the FIRST Marine Engineer to be a Commandant of BMA since its inception in 1962.
He is a Member of the WMU Board of Governors since 2013. Besides he is a IMO (UN) Goodwill Maritime Ambassador, a Marine Professional (Chartered Engineer [UK Engineering Council] &Chartered Marine Engineer [IMarEST London]), a Trustee, Council Member & Fellow of IMarEST London, a Trustee of IMarEST Guild of Benevolence, Maritime Expert of IMO & GlobalMET (Australia) and a Member of the Senate, Syndicate, Council & Finance Committee of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University (BSMRMU), Bangladesh.
He led establishing ‘BSMR Maritime University, Bangladesh’ (functioning since 2013) based on his WMU MSc Dissertation 'A proposal for establishment of a Maritime University in Bangladesh' and 4 New Marine Academies (2010-19) that have commenced in 2020.
He was a Minor Freedom Fighter under Sector-7 during Bangladesh liberation war in 1971.
He has demonstrated skills in Seafaring (1980-93: Cadet to Chief Engineer), in Maritime Education Management (1993-current) and has strong regimental educational backgrounds from Rajshahi Cadet College and Bangladesh Marine Academy with leadership positions. He is a reputed Professional with a CoC Class ONE Marine Engineer from MCA-UK, MSc in Maritime Safety Administration (Marine Engineering) from WMU in Sweden (1998) and a DSc in Maritime Education (Honoris Causa).
He was the Chief Cadet Captain in 1980 during his cadetship training at BMA and was the President of Asia-Pacific Students Forum and Class Representative at World Maritime University in 1998.
Author of 23 books, 34 Research papers and over 200 features; achieved IMarEST President’s Commendation 2012, IMarEST Award for his paper ‘Vision of e-Learning and its application into MET’ and IMarEST Award for 'Outstanding Contribution in Marine Education 2019'.
He has enhanced BMA from ‘Traditional toDigital’ with e-Learning, IT Labs and multimedia projectors; upgraded the 2-Years’ BSc PASS Degree of 1993 into 3-Years’ Bachelor of Maritime Science (BMS) PASS Degree in 2003 and finally into 4-Years’ BMS Honours Degree in 2013 and developed & introduced MSc in Maritime Science course in 2018.
He has enriched BMA with various international statuses like Link with AMC Australia (2010), DMU China, VMU Vietnam and SMA Singapore (2011), recognition of EU EMSA in (2011), MoU with WMU Sweden (2014), recognition of MPA Singapore (2015), ISO 9001:2015 from DNV-GL (2016), South Asian Business Award (2017), Partnering Status with World Maritime University, Sweden (2019), recognition of UK MNTB - Merchant Navy Training Board (2019), recognition of IMarEST London & NI London (2019) and recognition of Solent University, UK (2022).
His ongoing initiatives include establishment of Bangabandhu Techno Marina Complex (a research centre), establishing a Full-mission Marine Simulator Centre (Korea’s EDCF Project), MoU with MAAP Philippines (Maritime Academy of Asia & Pacific) for academic collaboration and recognition of UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

Sajid Hussain is a father of 1 son & 2 daughters. The son is an Architect; elder daughter is studying MSc in Information & Communication Systems in TUHH Germany and the younger one is studying MBA in the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh. His wife Ms. Meher Nigar is the Head Mistress of Bangladesh Marine Academy K G School. His father was (Late) Al-Haj Advocate Amzad Hussain [Ex-MP, 1973 Parliament & a Freedom Fighter of Sector-7] and Mother was (Late) Al-Haj Prof. Jannatul Ferdous [Ex-MP, 1996 Parliament & a Freedom Fighter of Sector-7].
