Project Website

Wreck responsibilities in Northern Europe (WRENE) research project aims to investigate the status quo management practices concerning wrecks of selected European Union member states neighbouring Sweden. The Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (SwAM) is particularly interested in learning about the legal arrangements for removal of leaking ships, responsibilities of authorities with regard to derelicts, compensation claims for property damage and environmental impacts. The deliverables, which are comprised of lessons learned from selected jurisdictions, will aid SwAM in developing a legal framework for wreck management and help map out the roles and responsibilities of respective authorities.
