WMU Side Event for 2022 UN Oceans Conference

Educating Ocean and Maritime Leaders: A Legacy of Excellence and Future Plans at the World Maritime University

Delegates attending UNOC are warmly invited to participate in the Side Event titled 'Educating Ocean and Maritime Leaders: A Legacy of Excellence and Future Plans at the World Maritime University'. The Side Event is scheduled to take place from 16:00-17:30 on 27 June 2022 in Auditorium III at the PT Meeting Center of the FIL Lisbon Exhibition and Congress Center. 

The Side Event is organized by the World Maritime University–Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute; and supported International Maritime Organization; Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sweden; The Sasakawa Peace Foundation Japan; Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS); The Nippon Foundation Japan; Swedish Agency of Marine and Water Management (SwAM) Sweden; and City of Malmö Sweden.

Objective

The Side Event will contribute to the thematic interactive dialogues topic 8 of the UN Ocean Conference, namely leveraging interlinkages between Sustainable Development Goal 14 Life Below Water and other goals such as SDG 4, SDG 5, SDG 9, SDG 15 and SGD 17 towards the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. It will showcase the capacity-building work of WMU in developing ocean and maritime leaders on the topics of ocean governance, land-to-ocean interconnection, marine debris, Sargassum, Marine Spatial Planning in the Eastern Caribbean, as well as technological regulations in the ocean industry context. The Event will highlight how to maximize human potential and establish a wide range of dynamic partnerships to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of the ocean and its resources for the benefit of all humankind.

The Side Event features representation and participation from governments, international organizations, research institutions, as well as private philanthropy in the field of ocean affairs.
