2014 KR-CON Donation

For the third consecutive year, the Korean Register of Shipping (KR) donated sets of KR-CON for the use of students and faculty. KR-CON is an international, award-winning database program of IMO instruments issued by the Korean Register of Shipping under an agreement with the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Thanks to the generosity of KR, KR-CON has been used as part of the training materials available to students at WMU since 2012. The system builds on IMO Conventions with additional links to visual materials such as photos and videos to help with understanding IMO instruments. The Consolidated Edition contains the latest IMO Conventions as well as all historical data, and the powerful word search function allows for sorting and customizing searches to define regulations that apply to a specific vessel. It also provides for anticipating regulations that are coming into force.

On 25 February, Mr. RYU Gyoung-Boo, General Manger of the Copenhagen Branch Office for KR, was at WMU to present the KR-CON system and distribute 196 sets of KR-CON. All students and faculty in Malmö received the web version of KR-CON, and when the USB-version 12 and mobile application are available in April, all students and faculty will receive them as well. The web and mobile access will be valid until June 2015.

The overall monetary value of the gift is nearly USD249,900. WMU expresses its gratitude to the Korean Register of Shipping, and its Chairman and CEO, Dr. Chon Young-kee, and former Chairman and CEO, Dr. Kong-Gyun Oh who serves as a member of the WMU Board of Governors, for the continued generosity and support of WMU programs.
