Hellenic Network of WMU Participates in the 2026 Posidonia Cup

The Hellenic Network of World Maritime University (WMU) Alumni (Greek Alumni) participated for the second time in the prestigious Posidonia Cup on Friday 29 May, competing in the race that took place in the scenic Faliron bay-Piraeus. The race is the first activity surrounding the prominent, biennial Posidonia international shipping exhibition that is taking place in Athens from 1-5 June this year.

The WMU sailing team was coordinated by WMU faculty members Assistant Professor Aspasia Pastra and Professor George Theocharidis. Capt. Nikolaos Polymeris, alumni class of 2022 and founding member of the Hellenic Network, funded the initiatives through the yacht provided by Polmar Yachting. This initiative is proudly supported by the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute, PVO Expeditions: Sail for Impact, and Costamare Inc. and reflects the strong connection between maritime education and training, industry leadership and the enduring spirit of seamanship.

The Posidonia Cup, renowned as Posidonia’s flagship sporting event, demonstrates the shipping community’s dedication to sustainability through harnessing the wind, and emphasizes the deep-rooted evolution of the industry within its historical context. The yacht race featured participation from more than 60 yachts and over 700 crew members from around the globe, highlighting the international spirit and collaborative ethos of the event.

The participation of the Hellenic Network of WMU Alumni underscores the commitment of its members and friends to actively engage in the forthcoming years in global maritime and sailing events that promote sustainable practices within the ocean and maritime sectors.
