ICES Seminar at WMU

WMU is developing a collaborative partnership with the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), which is headquartered in Copenhagen. As an initial step in the collaboration, two ICES scientists led a half-day seminar at WMU on 16 January for a group of students, researchers, and faculty.

ICES' Head of Science Programme, Dr. Adi Kellermann, and Projects Coordinator, Dr. Wojciech Wawrzynski, presented a range of topics under the heading of The European Research Landscape: Structure, Funding, Policies and Communication, and engaged an active discussion with the participants. Presentation points included:

  • Marine Research in Europe - Grand Challenges and Emerging Topics
  • Institutional Landscape in Marine Science in Europe
  • Ocean Management Policies in Europe
  • Research and Innovation Policies in Europe: The Process of Interdisciplinary Scientific Cooperation and Enhancement
  • Financing of the Marine Pillar of the European Research Area
  • ICES Past and Present: From Science to Advice

ICES is an intergovernmental organization for enhanced ocean sustainability. Their aim is to increase scientific knowledge of the marine environment, taking into consideration how human activities affect marine ecosystems and vice versa. With a network of over 4,000 scientists, ICES works to provide decision-makers with scientific knowledge to inform their choices on sustainable use of the marine environment and ecosystems.
