International Day Returns to WMU
After a three year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual WMU International Day celebration for 2022 was held on 27 August at the Henrik Smith Residence for students. The theme for this year’s event was “Unity in Diversity.” Nearly 300 people attended including students, staff, host families, friends and families of the students.
Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, WMU President, provided remarks for the gathering that were delivered by Professor Daniel Moon, Associate Academic Dean. Reflecting on the theme of “Unity in Diversity,” President Doumbia-Henry highlighted the diversity of WMU that is representative of the breadth of the United Nations itself. “I am pleased and very proud to say that the students of the World Maritime University display unity every single day. I see them working, studying, talking and laughing together,” she said. With the current challenges of climate change, political aggression and ongoing effects of the pandemic, she said, “Let us draw on the strength we show together today, at the International Day 2022, to join together in unity as we face our common future.”
International Day has been an annual event at WMU since 1999 and is a highlight of activities and events that are typically spread throughout the academic year. WMU’s International Day celebration brings together people from around the world to share their languages, culture and differences which in turn fosters appreciation and understanding, ultimately benefiting society as a whole. This year over 40 countries were represented with national dress, cultural presentations and food.
