MSEM Class of 2020 Graduation

The World Maritime University (WMU) 2020 graduation ceremony of the MSc specialization in Maritime Safety and Environmental Management in cooperation with Dalian Maritime University (DMU) took place on 6 December.

Of the 36 graduates, 22 participated in the ceremony in person in Dalian and 14 participated online.

A total of 36 MSEM 2020 students graduated with the WMU MSc Degree in Maritime Affairs. Of the graduating Class, 34 are from China and two are from the Democratic Republic of Korea.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of WMU, and Professor Shuo Ma, Vice President (International) of WMU participated in the ceremony via video link. On location in Dalian, Professor Yuqing Sun, President of DMU, Professor Youtao Zhao, Vice President of DMU and Mr. Junfeng Zhang, Deputy Director of the Human Resource Department for the Ministry of Transport participated in the ceremony. DMU faculty members for the programme were in attendance as well as officials from the China Maritime Safety Administrations.

In addressing the graduates, President Doumbia-Henry noted that the students faced immense challenges completing their degrees amidst the pandemic, but that it had only disrupted their plans, not their dreams. She maintained that these challenges had fostered the resiliency of the graduates and would shape them as professionals. “As highly qualified professionals, you will make an invaluable contribution to your industry, your country and the entire global maritime transportation sector in years to come. You can be proud of being part of the ever-growing global network of WMU alumni, just as WMU is proud to have you as a member of our family,” she said.

President Doumbia-Henry conferred the degrees on each graduating student. When the names of the graduates were announced, individual pages were shown with a picture and the name of each graduate. This was followed by a final speech delivered on behalf of the 2020 Class by Mr Han Xiaofeng. The ceremony ended with the songs of WMU and DMU.

Mr Cao Changwu received the Chancellor's Medal for Academic Excellence. Mr Ma Daoxue, Mr Song Chunyu, Ms Ma Wenxuan and Mr Shi Chuanzhu received DMU’s Best Dissertations Prize. The MSEM Spirit Award was received by Mr Fan Lei, and the Excellent Student Leader Prize was awarded to Mr Han Xiaofeng.
