80 Years of Global Cooperation - United Nations Day 2025

As the United Nations (UN) celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2025, UN Day on 24 October provides an opportunity to look back on eight decades of progress — and to look ahead with renewed commitment to tackling the complex challenges of our time.

On the occasion of UN Day 2025, Professor Maximo Q. Mejia, Jr., President of the World Maritime University (WMU), provided the following message:

“On this United Nations Day, marking 80 years since the founding of the UN, we celebrate the power of cooperation — the idea that by working together across borders, we can tackle challenges no single nation can solve alone. From building peace and advancing human rights to tackling climate change and promoting sustainable development, the UN continues to bring the world together in the interest of the greater good.

At WMU, cooperation defines our work. With students from over 50 countries in Malmö, learning and living together, and graduates from 171 countries around the world, WMU fosters cross-cultural understanding and cooperation in the true spirit of the United Nations. Through education, research, and capacity development, we are protecting our oceans, and strengthening the maritime sector that connects nations and drives the global economy.

The challenges facing our world today are immense — climate crises, conflicts, and rapid technological change require creativity, action, and above all, cooperation. UN Day is a moment to celebrate what we can achieve together, transforming ideas into real-world solutions to build a stronger, sustainable future for us all.”

WMU is the only UN institution headquartered in Sweden, established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized UN agency. The University plays a vital role in building global maritime and ocean capacity through education, research, and professional development, advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

About United Nations Day

United Nations Day, on 24 October, marks the anniversary of the 1945 entry into force of the United Nations (UN) Charter. UN Day has been celebrated annually since 1948, and is an opportunity to reaffirm the purposes and principles of the UN Charter as an international treaty which codifies the basic tenets of international relations from the sovereign equality of states to prohibition of the use of force in any manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations.

Established within the framework of the International Maritime Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations, WMU’s mission is to be the world centre of excellence in postgraduate maritime and oceans education, professional training and research, while building global capacity and promoting sustainable development.
