Webinar on National Pathways to Maritime Decarbonization

The World Maritime University (WMU) hosted a public alumni webinar titled “National Pathways to Maritime Decarbonization: Aligning Global Ambitions with Local Action” on 9 December 2025.

The webinar explored how countries are translating the International Maritime Organization’s ambition of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 into effective national policies and actions. Discussions focused on national action plans, investment in green port infrastructure, the use of alternative fuels, and capacity development initiatives that support low-carbon maritime operations.

Drawing on diverse regional experiences, the session highlighted practical solutions for maritime decarbonization and emphasized the importance of aligning global commitments with local realities. The webinar fostered dialogue and collaboration among policymakers, maritime professionals, researchers, and other stakeholders committed to advancing a cleaner, more resilient, and competitive maritime future.

The webinar was moderated by Professor Ronan Long, Director of the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute, and Associate Professor Tafsir T. M. Johansson. The presentation was delivered by Lamin Jawara, Research Assistant and PhD Candidate at WMU, Malmö, Sweden, and was followed by an interactive question-and-answer session with participants. The webinar brought together over 200 participants from 68 countries.
