WMU and Eugenides Foundation Strengthen Strategic Collaboration

In a significant commitment to the future of the Greek maritime sector, the World Maritime University (WMU) and the Eugenides Foundation formalized a strategic partnership on 2 June during the Posidonia 2026 international shipping exhibition. This collaboration establishes ties across multiple academic and professional fronts to promote long-term maritime excellence, focusing on key pillars for exchange and capacity development.

The MoU was signed by Professor Maximo Q. Mejia, Jr, President of WMU, and Mr Leonidas Dimitriades-Eugenides, President of the Eugenides Foundation. In the signing ceremony, the partners highlighted the joint, strategic investment in the technical expertise and resilience of the Greek maritime community, as part of a globalized sector of shipping.

As a cornerstone of the alliance, the Eugenides Foundation will provide a full annual fellowship that will enable a Greek mid-career professional to pursue a Master of Science (MSc) in Maritime Affairs at the WMU campus in Malmö, Sweden. Continuing the Eugenides legacy of supporting Greek maritime education, the fellowship will prioritize candidates from the Greek Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy, as well as graduates of Greek Maritime Merchant Academies with significant seagoing experience. Selected fellows will focus on specializations vital to modern maritime governance: Maritime Safety & Environmental Administration (MSEA) or Maritime Education & Training (MET).

Another central feature of the agreement is the joint delivery of Professional Development Courses (PDCs) in Greece, which align with the Eugenides Foundation's broader "Skilling and Upskilling the NextGen Seafarers" initiative. These courses include jointly developed specialized "Train-the-Trainers" programmes designed to support Greek maritime instructors to remain at the cutting edge of global industry standards.

Embracing the next generation of digital learning, the partnership also leverages the combined strengths of the WMU and Eugenides Foundation libraries through exploring digital content sharing and innovative approaches to hybrid maritime educational resources. Furthermore, the parties will cooperate on translating and adapting interactive maritime educational materials into official UN languages, ensuring these Greek-developed resources reach a global audience.

Often referred to as the 'Home' of Maritime Education in Greece, the Eugenides Foundation continues to serve as a vital link between the country’s maritime heritage and its innovative future, while expanding its reach within the international education ecosystem. As a global center of excellence for maritime and oceans education and leadership, WMU joins forces with the Eugenides Foundation to foster a more resilient and sustainable maritime future.
