WMU Commits to a Sustainable Blue Economy
At the 2019 Our Ocean Conference, held in Oslo, Norway from 23-24 October, WMU made a commitment to significant and meaningful action towards a Sustainable Blue Economy.
The World Maritime University (WMU) was represented at the conference by Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of WMU. As conveyed by President Doumbia-Henry, “WMU is committed to ensuring the highest levels of postgraduate education, research, and capacity building to enable, in particular, developing countries and small island developing states (SIDS) to be able to engage as stewards of the sea to protect our oceans, and to ensure the sustainable development of their countries.”
Voluntary commitments are at the core of the Our Ocean conferences. Previous conferences have resulted in nearly one thousand commitments from governments, organizations and businesses announcing new and far-reaching actions that have significant impact.
The first Our Ocean Conference was hosted in 2014 by the US Department of State in Washington, D.C. Individuals, experts, practitioners, advocates, lawmakers, and the international ocean and foreign policy communities from nearly 90 countries were brought together to discuss lessons learned, share the best science, offer unique perspectives, and demonstrate effective actions. Our Ocean conferences have successively been held in Chile, Washington, D.C., Malta, and Bali.
