WMU Continues Collaboration with USCGA

In 2011, WMU and the United States Coast Guard Academy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding a faculty exchange program. As part of that MoU, Associate Professor Aykut Ölcer taught the third course to be offered under that agreement at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut 25 - 29 March. The course addressed maritime safety in terms of a reactive vs. pro-active approach, as well as green-focused ship design and optimization, emissions and energy efficiency, renewable energy, alternative fuels, and propulsion. During his time in the US, Dr. Ölcer was also a guest speaker at the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) and made a presentation about WMU at a SNAME dinner on 26 March.
