‍

The World Maritime University-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute (WMU-GOI) engaged with representatives of China’s marine and ocean institutions during a meeting at the Chinese Consul General in Gothenburg on 25 September, providing an opportunity to exchange perspectives on ocean governance, the BBNJ Agreement and sustainable ocean development.

The meeting, hosted by His Excellency Yang Peidong, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China, was held during an official visit to Sweden by a 23-member Chinese delegation comprising senior officials and representatives working across marine resources, ocean governance, marine spatial planning, the blue economy, sustainable development and the green transition. Representatives from the Ministry of Natural Resources and other Chinese marine, geological, research and policy institutions participated in the meeting.

Professor Ronán Long, Director of the WMU-GOI, presented the University's contributions to maritime and ocean education, research and capacity development, as well as its work to advance sustainable ocean governance. He also presented the Ireland WMU-GOI BBNJ Clinic Programme, funded by the Government of Ireland to support Small Island Developing States and Coastal Least Developed Countries in strengthening their capacity to ratify and implement the BBNJ Agreement.

The meeting highlighted the value of continued dialogue and knowledge exchange between WMU and Chinese institutions working across the marine and ocean sectors.
