WMU Hosts SAIL Project Partner Meeting

The sixth meeting for partners of the SAIL research project was hosted by WMU on 4 November. In addition to the partners meeting, five of the participants presented a seminar for WMU students and faculty on 5 November entitled “Wind Energy and Its Potential Onboard Ships”.

The SAIL project began in July 2012 and will end by June 2015. The € 3,4 million project is funded through Interreg IVB North Sea Region Programme and involves 17 partners from seven North Sea countries; The Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, United Kingdom, and France. The main objectives of the project are to explore the potential of wind energy onboard ships and to promote merchant wind assisted sailing through a Triple Helix (science, economy, public) approach. This will be realized by developing innovative, effective and efficient, sustainable transnational sailing solutions using less, or even no, fossil fuels.

WMU’s main involvement in SAIL is Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of the selected ship type and wind propulsion configuration. Additional tasks are assessing externalities and the development of a decision support system for selecting the best wind propulsion alternative.

SAIL is the third research project that falls under the Maritime Energy Research Group since it was formed in 2013. The Group is led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aykut Ölçer.
