WMU - Keeping Active in the Community

The World Maritime University has a long-standing history of engaging with the local community and has been active in supporting local events and community efforts, including engagement with local schools. Our host City of Malmö is notably sustainably-oriented and in recent years, many collaborations have focused on common efforts in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals with cooperation on important events such as the 2018 WMU Global Ocean Conference and the Inauguration of the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute.

Rotary Malmö International
Members of the Malmö International Rotary Club meet online with WMU Professor Michael Manuel, Head of Maritime Education and Training, and Lyndell Lundahl, Assistant Registrar (Student Services).

The University is always interested in opportunities to engage with the community. Most recently, WMU participated in an online meeting with the Malmö International Rotary Club. The meeting provided the opportunity for Professor Michael Manuel, Head of Maritime Education and Training, and Lyndell Lundahl, Assistant Registrar (Student Services) to share the work of WMU with a local audience that is not necessarily connected to the maritime and ocean community. Discussions included the history, mandate and goals of the University, as well as the uniqueness and value of its contribution to the local and global community.

Particular interest was generated regarding the University's host family programme that helps foster contact with, and insight into, Swedish culture. Each host family is matched with one or two students who are invited to their host’s home during the 14-month programme of study at WMU. Many of the relationships fostered result in lifelong friendships that are maintained after the students graduate and return home. Additional recent and upcoming Rotary presentations include the Falsterbo-Vellinge Rotary Club this past fall, and an invitation from the Malmö Södra Rotary Club that will be honoured later this year. For information about becoming a host family for WMU students, contact info@wmu.se.

Rotary describes their organization as “a global network of 1.2 million neighbours, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite to take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.” Their mission is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.

The World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmö, Sweden is established within the framework of the International Maritime Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations. The mission of WMU is to be the world centre of excellence in postgraduate maritime and oceans education, professional training and research, while building global capacity and promoting sustainable development. WMU is an organization by and for the international maritime community and is committed to the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
