WMU Team Visits Nigeria in Connection with WeCAPS Project

From 18-23 April, faculty members from the World Maritime University (WMU) visited maritime, port, and disaster management agencies in Nigeria in connection with the European Union-funded Western and Central Africa Port Security (WeCAPS) project. Professor Max Mejia and Assistant Professor Khanssa Lagdami visited various agencies and offices to gain valuable insight and understanding of the current status of ISPS Code compliance and disaster management and response in Nigeria. The intended outcome is to provide recommendations for further strengthening relevant instruments and processes which will be shared with the relevant agencies and stakeholders at a workshop to be held in Lagos within the coming months.

Meetings included the Nigerian Maritime Administration (NIMASA) and Safety Agency with the Director General, Dr. Bashir Jamoh and senior management; the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) with the Managing Director Mr. Mohammed B. Koko and senior management; the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) with Permanent Secretary Dr. Femi Oke Osanyintolu and senior management; the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency with Lagos State Zonal Head Mr. Ebanefo Emmanuel Olisa; and the Law Firm of Matthew Burkaa & Co. with maritime lawyer Attorney Matthew Burkaa, his staff, and maritime stakeholder Mr. Emmanuel Maiguwa.

The visit concluded with a dinner hosted by WMU alumni in Lagos. To date, there are 246 WMU graduates from Nigeria.
