WMU Welcomes MOESNA Secretary General

Mr Kassim K. Mpaata, Secretary General of the Maritime Organisation for Eastern, Southern and Northern Africa (MOESNA), and WMU Vice President (Provost) Professor Michael Ekow Manuel

The World Maritime University (WMU) welcomed the Secretary General of the Maritime Organisation for Eastern, Southern and Northern Africa (MOESNA), Mr Kassim K. Mpaata, to Malmö on 6 July for a high-level courtesy meeting. Mr Mpaata was received by WMU Vice President (Provost) Professor Michael Ekow Manuel, representing the President of the University.

The meeting reaffirmed the long-standing partnership between WMU and MOESNA and provided an opportunity to review ongoing collaboration and explore new initiatives to strengthen maritime education, capacity development, research, policy development and technical cooperation across Eastern, Southern and Northern Africa.

A key focus of the discussions was the progress of the feasibility study for the establishment of a Regional Maritime University (RMU), which WMU is undertaking in collaboration with MOESNA. The study, now in its final phase, has examined regional maritime education needs, governance models and institutional requirements, identifying strong demand for a regional centre of excellence to educate internationally competitive maritime professionals while strengthening research, innovation and policy support for Member States.

The discussions also considered opportunities to strengthen cooperation in executive and professional education and broader capacity development to equip maritime professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to address emerging challenges and opportunities across the maritime sector.

The meeting concluded with both institutions reaffirming their shared commitment to deepening cooperation in support of sustainable maritime development and the development of a safe, secure, environmentally sustainable and economically competitive maritime sector across the MOESNA region.
