World Oceans Day 2025

The United Nations (UN) celebrates World Oceans Day annually on 8 June as an opportunity to raise global awareness of the benefits humankind derives from the ocean and our individual and collective duty to use its resources sustainably. A healthy world ocean is critical to our survival.

“WONDER: Sustaining What Sustains Us,” is the theme for World Oceans Day 2025. According to the official World Oceans Day website, the ocean’s wonder is what draws us in and often drives our desire to protect it. This World Oceans Day celebrates the ocean’s essential wonder from all of the wonders it consists of to the wonder it ignites, and calls on decision-makers to not lose sight of the ocean’s wonder when determining its fate.

In recognition of World Oceans Day 2025, Professor Maximo Q. Mejia, Jr., President of the World Maritime University (WMU) provided the following video message:

“The 2025 World Oceans Day theme — WONDER: Sustaining What Sustains Us — is a powerful reminder of the boundless wonder of the ocean, a source of life, inspiration, and global connection. At the World Maritime University, ocean issues are integrated across all our programmes to foster a deep respect for the marine environment in our students—future leaders, policymakers, and innovators.

Through interdisciplinary education, research, and global collaboration, WMU is championing ocean sustainability and stewardship. The ocean transcends borders, uniting us all, and its protection requires collective responsibility and inspired action.

May the wonder of the ocean continue to inspire passion in each and every one of us to ensure that through our actions —large and small—we sustain what sustains us, preserving the vitality of our oceans for the benefit of future generations and the health of our planet.”

Since its founding, WMU has contributed to sustainable use of the oceans by focusing on the implementation and enforcement of IMO instruments to reduce accidents and ship-source pollution. Building on this strong foundation, ocean-related matters have become part of WMU’s mandate and are incorporated across all degree programmes. In addition, the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute carries out specialized research on ocean-related topics, and WMU faculty are contributing impactful research.

WMU at 2025 UN Ocean Conference

On 8 June 2025, United Nations World Oceans Day will be celebrated in Nice, France, ahead of the 2025 UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) that will take place 9 – 13 June. The unique alignment of two major UN ocean events is an unprecedented opportunity to amplify visibility and collaborative efforts for the ocean. WMU is contributing to several UNOC3 side events.
