Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) Adam Birch joined the United States Coast Guard in 2011, serving various assignments as an Operations Specialist both underway on several Coast Guard Cutters conducting Fisheries and Counter Narcotics patrols, and on shoreside assignment primarily orchestrating Search & Rescue missions.  Upon earning a commission as an officer, he entered the Marine Safety specialization as a Marine Inspector, focusing on conducting the Coast Guard’s regulatory oversight responsibilities of foreign- and U.S.-flagged vessels.  He served as a Marine Inspector at Marine Safety Unit (MSU) Portland from 2016-2019, a Marine Inspector at Activities Europe from 2019-2023, and most recently as the Chief, Inspections Division at MSU Chicago from 2023-2026.  

LCDR Birch joined the faculty of the World Maritime University in July 2026 where he is on secondment as a guest lecturer and liaison officer assigned to the Maritime Safety and Environmental Administration specialization. He is happily married to his wife and they have two children.
