Akrita Kaur joined the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute as a Project and Research Support Intern under the Future Ocean Programme. She is a Doctoral Scholar at the Department of Laws, Panjab University, Chandigarh, India, where her research examines the legal regime for combating marine pollution in the Indian Ocean and the evolving challenges of marine environmental governance. Before commencing her doctoral research, she taught Family Law as a visiting Assistant Professor and has been engaged in legal research and teaching with various institutions and organisations.
At GOI, she supports the Institute’s research and project activities within the Future Ocean Programme, contributing to ongoing work on non-state actors and rights-based approaches to ocean protection while assisting with research and outreach initiatives.
Akrita holds an LL.M. in Constitutional and Administrative Law and a B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) from Panjab University. She qualified the University Grants Commission’s National Eligibility Test for Junior Research Fellowship in Law in 2024 and is enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana.
The thoughtfully planned and picturesque city of Chandigarh, nestled at the foothills of the Himalayas, where she grew up and pursued her education, continues to shape her curiosity about the world. Beyond her academic work, she enjoys travelling, baking the occasional dessert, staying active through sport and engaging with good literature and conversations that speak to both the mind and the heart.
