Jaime Veiga has been with EMSA for the past 10 years. He is a Senior Project Officer and Sector Leader of B.1.2 - Training of Seafarers.

His responsibilities involve: managing a team of international experts in education, training and certification of seafarers; organizing STCW inspections and visits to verify compliance with the STCW requirements as well as those established under Directive 2008/106/EC (on behalf of the European Commission and the EU Member States); managing of the STCW Information System; providing technical assistance to the European Commission; dealing with Human Element issues; training of experts from EU Member States, Accession and ENP Countries; representing the Agency in conferences, workshops and related events, including the IMO HTW Sub-Committee.

Concurrently he is a Visiting Professor at the World Maritime University (WMU), Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (ISEG) and Portuguese Maritime Academy (ENIDH). Other academic activities include being an external examiner of PhD candidates at Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya and University of Évora; an external examiner of MSc candidates at the World Maritime University, University of Aveiro and ENIDH. He has been a member of the Editorial Board of the WMU Technical Journal and Revista de Marinha. Between 2008 and 2012 he was a member of the General Council of ENIDH.

Previously he worked for the Cardiff School of Social Sciences (Seafarers International Research Centre). His tasks included the management, coordination and participation in several projects in the following areas: Seafarers Education and Training; Training of Ratings; Attractiveness of Seafaring Careers; Women Seafarers. He coordinated also the EU-ASEAN Project; being an expert in the CIIPMET (China, India, Indonesia and the Philippines) Project and Supervisor of MPhil/PhD students.

He was at the same time delivering lectures and tutorials to MSc and BSc Marine Policy and International Transport students at the Cardiff Business School.

Previously he worked for the firm of consultancy and training FRESTI and spent ten years at sea as deck officer, having a master mariner certificate.

He has published several articles and a co-authored book in relation to his area of expertise.

He holds a PhD in Marine Policy form the University of Wales, a MSc in Maritime Safety Administration from the WMU and a BSc in management and maritime technologies from ENIDH. He also holds a ISO 9000:2000 Series Lead Auditor Certificate.

He has been involved in charity activities as well as in sports. In this respect he is Vice President of CD Alverca Volley and a regular long-distance runner.
