Dr. Khanssa Lagdami is the ITF Seafarers' Trust Associate Professor in Maritime Labour Law and Policy at the World Maritime University (WMU), where she has served since 2015. She previously served as the lead and academic coordinator of the Maritime Welfare (Mari-Wel) program at WMU, a professional development initiative that provided a comprehensive overview of seafarers’ welfare by bringing together world-leading experts on seafarers’ rights, maritime regulations, and welfare issues. Although the Mari-Wel program is currently deactivated, Dr. Lagdami’s leadership helped establish it as a key platform for advancing knowledge and best practices in maritime welfare.
Dr. Lagdami is also a lead member of WMU’s Future of Work program, engaging in research and capacity-building projects that address the evolving challenges in the maritime sector. In addition to her academic roles, she works as a consultant for the European Commission, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and various United Nations agencies, providing expert advice on maritime labour law, maritime security, and related policy matters.
Through her work as a project manager for various international projects, Dr. Lagdami has led the legal analysis of port and maritime security frameworks in several countries, with a particular focus on French- and English-speaking African nations as well as Arab countries. She has provided tailored recommendations for the enhancement of legal and regulatory frameworks to strengthen maritime and port security in these regions.
A dual citizen of Morocco and France, Dr. Lagdami is multilingual, fluent in Arabic, French, and English, which enhances her ability to engage with diverse international stakeholders. Her expertise encompasses maritime labour law, human rights at sea, maritime security, and the future of work in the maritime industry. She is actively involved in project creation, management, capacity building, and training, with a particular focus on developing countries.
Before joining WMU, Dr. Lagdami taught international public law, the law of the sea, and maritime law at the Faculty of Law, University of Nantes in France. She holds a Ph.D. in Maritime Law from the University of Nantes, an M.Sc. in Maritime Affairs Management, and an LL.M. in International Comparative Law from the University of Perpignan, France, reflecting her multidisciplinary expertise and commitment to advancing maritime affairs globally.
