Dr. Milena Arias Schreiber is a fisheries researcher with a background in natural and social sciences. She obtained her master’s degree in international studies in Aquatic Tropical Ecology and holds a PhD in Economic and Social Sciences. In 2015, she relocated to Sweden for her post-doctoral position as a social scientist at the University of Gothenburg. She went on to work as an associate researcher in Environmental Social Sciences at the School of Global Studies at the same university. In 2018, she was awarded a three year’s European Marie Skłodowska‑Curie Individual Fellowship to conduct research on fisheries for the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Prior to her postgraduate studies, Dr. Arias Schreiber served as head of the Marine Mammals Department at the Peruvian National Marine Institute (IMARPE).
At the University of Gothenburg, Dr. Milena Arias Schreiber played a pivotal role in the development of the Master Programme Sea and Society at the Department of Marine Sciences. Since its establishment in 2019, she has been a dedicated member of this master programme’s teaching staff. Between 2021 and 2023 she was in charge of the Graduate School in Transdisciplinary Ocean Sciences connecting the disciplines of physical geography, marine ecology, environmental social sciences, anthropology, business administration and science and technology studies.
As a researcher, Dr. Milena Arias Schreiber has published extensively in international journals such as Society and Natural Resources, Marine Policy, Ecology and Society, Maritime Studies, Sustainability Science and Ocean and Society. She has worked as a consultant for the European Union Parliament's Committee on Fisheries, is the Swedish representative at the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) Working Group on Social Indicators and participates as an expert in activities of the European Union’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
