Following a career at sea and ashore where he operated bulk carriers, Richard qualified as a lawyer and has been involved in many of the world’s casualties particularly collisions, groundings, explosions, and salvage, and subsequent contractual disputes. He acts for salvors, owners, underwriters, and P+I clubs in all manner of disputes in Arbitration and the English High Court, focusing on those of a technical nature, such as unsafe port, P&I claims, and GA disputes. His work has included a number of claims involving complex containership casualties as well as emergency towage services, wreck removal, Towhire and Towcon, Supplytime, and decommissioning. Notable recent cases include the Heroic Idun (ITLoS; LMAA arb), CMA CGM Libra (SC), Osios David (HC), Seacor Power (LOF Arb), and Ever Given (HC). He is on the drafting Committee for the BIMCO suite of Wreck Contracts and is the legal advisor to the International Salvage Union (ISU).
