Tiago Fonseca is a Technical Officer at the World Maritime University. In his capacity, he conducts a wide range of research on maritime labour and technology, mainly from an economics, policy and statistics lens. These include research projects on the future of work, digitalisation and automation of the maritime sector, and socio-economical aspects of the transport and logistics sector.
Before his current position, Dr Fonseca worked on several research projects related to technological change, innovation strategies, productivity, jobs and skills. His research has been presented in the most important conferences on economics and management and published in top journals in the field. Dr Fonseca has also been invited as a speaker on topics such as the future of work, digitalisation of the transport sector and aspects related to autonomous ships. He is also one of the lead authors of WMU's flagship reports Transport 2040. As a scholar, Dr Fonseca is particularly interested in the interception between labour, technology and policy.
Dr Tiago Fonseca holds a PhD in Engineering and Management with honours from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Portugal, with a thesis about the effects of new technologies on jobs, productivity and innovation strategies. He has also been teaching on several courses, supervised master dissertations, always working enthusiastically to provide the best learning experience to his students.
