Development of a New Evaluation System for Simulator Training utilizing Physiological Index

The aim of this project is to develop a new evaluation system for simulator training utilizing the physiological indices Heart Rate Variability (HRV), Nasal Temperature (NT), and Saliva. Previous research indicated that the physiological indices HRV and NT reflect changes in mental workload, and the physiological index Saliva indicates stress level during simulator training. Based on these earlier results, this project's objective is to develop a system which evaluates the level of difficulty of different simulation scenarios by using the different stress levels estimated by these indices. Furthermore, the project aims to propose simulation approaches, methods and scenario considerations related to the findings, for the optimum training and assessment of seafarers. The project is being undertaken under IAMU funding and the other partners working with WMU are Kobe University, California Maritime Academy, and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology.
