SeaCare

Seafarer Enhancing Assistance: Crisis and Response Education
Project Duration
November 2025
-
October 2027

For years, crisis responders (CRs) of maritime welfare organizations have visited vessels to provide mental aid to seafarers facing severe stress. Living and working conditions on merchant vessels are highly demanding - long hours, fatigue, isolation and harsh environments increase stress and the risk of traumatic incidents.

These experiences have profound psychological effects, making immediate mental care crucial to prevent PTSD. Maritime crisis response differs significantly from onshore support, as seafarers lack access to resources and must support each other, often acting as both victims and helpers during crises.

SEA-CARE aims to develop and pilot a systematic, adaptable, standardized training program to enhance the competencies of Maritime Crisis Responders (CRs), enabling them to deliver effective, consistent, high quality, and timely support for seafarers.
