WMU Class of 2018 - China Graduations

On 25 and 26 August, graduation ceremonies were held in Shanghai and Dalian for a total of 58 students. One third were female graduates bringing the total number of female graduates from WMU’s China campuses to over 200. Since the programmes were founded in 2005, a total of 934 students have graduated from WMU’s two China programmes.

Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of WMU, conferred the degrees and reminded the graduates of the importance of a sustainable, efficient and competitive maritime industry. She drew attention to the World Maritime Day  2018 “IMO 70: Our Heritage - Better Shipping for a Better Future” as well as the celebration of WMU which is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. She also referred to the 2019 IMO World Maritime Day theme “Empowering Women in the Maritime Community” and emphasized the role the graduates are expected to play in helping to achieve the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. “Gender balance and equal opportunities for all stakeholders are essential pre-conditions for a sustainable maritime industry. WMU is at the forefront of educating female maritime professionals and fostering an overall learning environment that emphasizes gender equity on all fronts,” said Dr. Doumbia-Henry pointing to SDG 5: Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. She also noted that all the graduates of both programmes had obtained employment opportunities or were returning back to their sending institutions.


ITL Class of 2018 Graduation, Shanghai

The 2018 graduation ceremony of WMU’s MSc Programme in International Transport and Logistics (ITL) took place in Shanghai, China on 25 August. In total there were 26 graduates.

In addition to Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of WMU, in attendance were Professor Shuo Ma, Vice President (International) of WMU, and representing SMU Dr. Jin Yongxing, Chairman of the SMU Council as well as several SMU faculty members involved in delivery of the ITL programme. Family members and friends of the graduates as well as the students of the ITL 2019 class were also in attendance. Mr. Xu Dong graduated with distinction and received the Chancellor's Medal for Academic Excellence.  Ms. Chen Wei, Ms. Xu Jiajia and Mr. Xu Dong received Best Research Paper awards while Mr Xu Dong also received a prize offered by a local container leasing company.

The ITL programme commenced in 2005 and is offered in cooperation with Shanghai Maritime University. To date, 424 graduates have completed the ITL programme.

MSEM Class of 2018 Graduation, Dalian

The 2018 graduation ceremony of WMU’s MSc Programme in Maritime Safety and Environmental Management (MSEM) took place in Dalian, China on 26 August. In total there were 32 graduates.

In addition to Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of WMU, in attendance were Professor Shuo Ma, Vice President (International) of WMU and the Director of the MSEM programme, Dr. Sun Yuqing, President of DMU, Dr. Zhao Youtao, Vice Presidents of DMU, and many DMU faculty involved in delivery of the MSEM programme. Family members and friends of the graduates, a number of representatives of the nominating authorities, and the students of the MSEM 2019 class also were in attendance. Ms. Jiao Lei received the Chancellor’s Medal for Academic Excellence. Ms. Li Tongfan received the Best Research Paper award. Mr.Ding Baoxi received the award of “MSEM Spirit”, which is the equivalent to WMU’s Srivastava Award.

The MSEM programme commenced in 2005 and is offered in cooperation with Dalian Maritime University. To date, 510 graduates have completed the MSEM programme.
